Edward G Robinson shows his ability to play the vulnerable sap that is sucked down into the pits of despair and corruption for nothing more then following his heart and not having the confidence to make the most of his artist talents. No happy endings in this film, this is as dark a noir as they come, at least emotionally anyway.
